MAY 13, 2008 Project gReEnMODEL Project: Low-Income Housing Green Remodel Team: Description: Architecture for Humanity seeks to combine its humanitarian and sustainable goals into one project, by inviting families of low-income housing units to apply for unit-specific design solutions. The process begins with several targeted low-income buildings that have units in need of improvements. The families of these units will be given an application to complete and return to AfH-LA by a certain date. Once the applications are in, AfH-LA will choose several of the submitted design problems to address, based on need and green potential(projects that would demand green materials and techniques will be favored). Once the families have been selected, AfH-LA will schedule a day to visit the family’s building with the Mobile Design Lab(MDL) to design a solution to the problem. This collaborative strategy of design will be more effective since the client and the designer will be working out the problem together. At the end of the meeting when both parties are satisfied with the result, the design team from AfH-LA will take the solution back to the offices to begin organizing a construction effort. When the design has been budgeted and a team with supplies is assembled, AfH-LA will return to the families unit and build the proposed solution. The remodel will not only benefit the family, but also the building, future tenants, and the environment. Budget: $100-$1000 per remodel (funds going primarily towards supplies and labor).
